City & Guilds is the leading assessment qualification and vocational awarding body in the United Kingdom and offers over 500 work-related qualifications, at all levels from entry to post graduate, across all areas of industry and commerce.
The City & Guilds Group consists of City & Guilds (UK), City & Guilds International, ILM (Institute of Leadership & Management), Hospitality Awarding Body (HAB), City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development and the National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC).
City & Guilds can trace its roots back to the mid 13th century, but was specifically established in 1878 to serve a worldwide base of customers. The South African office of City & Guilds was established in Johannesburg in 1987.
City & Guilds has a reputation for developing qualifications that are internationally recognised by educators and employers alike as evidenced by our students achieving a specified standard in terms of work-related competence and associated knowledge and understanding. The expertise and experience of City & Guilds International makes the organisation a highly respected international awarding body - a leader in setting standards and offering quality awards.
City & Guilds International actively operates in more than 100 countries, through 8500 centres worldwide, including large global organisations. There are three major international hubs: London (servicing Europe, the Gulf regions, the Caribbean and Americas), Johannesburg (servicing Africa) and Singapore (servicing Asia, Australia and New Zealand). There are many other international offices across the globe including places such as China, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, West Malaysia, Russia, Cyprus, Ireland and India amongst others.
City & Guilds is the chosen college for people of all ages and educational backgrounds for many reasons i.e. some candidates are taking their first steps towards a career and see a City & Guilds Certificate level award as an entry route to the required education and training. Some are improving their skills to either start a career or enhance their existing career while others simply want to experience the pleasure of learning something new for its own sake.
The City & Guilds Diploma and Advanced Diploma facilitates progression and can lead to the award of the full Technological Diploma. There are over 1.5 million learners who work towards a City & Guilds qualification each year.
To help candidates to proceed to a higher education internationally, City & Guilds makes every effort to ensure that maximum recognition is given to its qualifications. City & Guilds negotiates with the UK, European and USA Universities and Colleges to ensure that the Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications are recognised as meeting the entry requirements for further study. The detailed and comprehensive Recognition List can be viewed on the City & Guilds website
www.cityandguilds.com, or is available on request from the Institute.
City & Guilds International does not offer courses itself. These are usually run in Colleges and Educational Institutes. Any organisation, which offers a course leading to a City & Guilds qualification, has been approved by City & Guilds and is referred to as a "centre". You will take your examinations or assessments at the Institute for Hospitality Education (SA) where you attend your course, or at an approved examination centre locally or overseas.
